Do We Treat Genders Differently?
Presenter – Dr. Marcia James, Professor, UW-Whitewater; Erin Goepfert, Student, UW-Whitewater

The foundation of this session is a research study that was conducted with future business teachers from 16 states. A 20-statement quiz was completed and returned by 150 of the 441 members of Pi Omega Pi who were initiated during 2004-06; Pi Omega Pi is a national honorary business education society. Data were analyzed to determine if the male gender was more knowledgeable of gender communication traits and stereotypes as compared to the knowledge of female respondents. With one exception, the majority of both the males and females indicated the statements correctly as being either true and false. Participants in this session will also have the opportunity to complete this quiz. Discussion of each statement in relation to the current and existing research will aid the participants to understand how the stereotypes of gender communication are changing. This information is pertinent to teachers who are preparing males and females for the business world. Roleplaying will be used as a method to reinforce the stereotypes.
